Frequently asked questions

Below are some frequently asked questions for employers. We also have frequently asked questions for your employees who are transferring to Mercer Business Super.

Your employees’ new details

  • Will Mercer send us our employees’ new details?

To assist you with updating your payroll system, we’ll send you a secure link to a spreadsheet containing your employees’ new superannuation details. Please look out for an encrypted email sent to you from ‘Employer Portal’ between 31 March and 2 April 2026. This will provide you secure access to your spreadsheet.

  • What does the encrypted email look like?

As Mercer is a Marsh business, this email will be encrypted using Marsh’s Proofpoint email encryption service. It will feature:

    • ‘Employer Portal’ as the sender
    • ‘SEND SECURE’ at the beginning of the subject line
    • The Marsh logo
    • The body of the message will confirm it is a secure email and have a ‘click here’ link to read the message
    • There is also a ‘More info’ link for detailed instructions.
  • How do I access the encrypted email?

If this is your first encrypted email from us, select the ‘click here’ link to open it and follow the instructions to set your password. The password rules will display when you click or tap on the password field. Each time you receive an encrypted message from us, you will sign in with your email address and this password.

If you have received encrypted emails from us previously, select the ‘click here’ link to open it. You will be prompted to enter your email address and existing password. If needed, the login page has a ‘forgot password’ link to change or reset the password.

Communicating with employees

  • How is Mercer Super communicating with our employees?

All impacted Mercer Super members, including your employees, received formal notice of the transfer in February 2026 (or as part of their welcome communication if they joined your employer super account after that time).

In April, your employees will receive a notice with their new account number, member number, USI, BPAY® details and access to their Transfer Statement, which includes key information such as their transaction history from 1 July 2025 to 20 March 2026.

Setting up new members

Paying contributions for existing employees

The below information applies if you are a participating employer in the Mercer Super Trust and have a Mercer Super employer account which has moved to Mercer Business Super. If you don’t have an employer super account with us, skip to paying contributions for ‘choice of fund’ employees.

  • What information do I need to update for my employees?

Refer to the ‘How to restart contributions’ guide for details of how to update your employees’ details and restart contributions.

  • Should I update my employees’ details now?

To assist you with updating your payroll system, we’ll send you a secure link to a spreadsheet containing your employees’ new superannuation details. Please look out for an encrypted email sent to you from ‘Employer Portal’ between 31 March and 2 April 2026. This will provide you secure access to your spreadsheet.

Once you have your spreadsheet you can go ahead and update your employees’ details.

What is the Mercer Business Super USI?

    • New Plan name: Mercer Business Super
    • New USI: 19905422981708
  • Is the new USI for all employees with Mercer Super accounts?

No. Only employees in the below plans have moved to Mercer Business Super:

    • Mercer SmartSuper Plan USI: 19905422981888
    • Mercer Super Trust – SmartSuper USI: 19905422981999

If you have employees who are members of another Mercer Super product, you can continue to pay those contributions as usual.

  • Do I use account or member number when making contributions?

In Mercer Business Super, you should use your employees’ 10-digit account numbers for making contributions.

To assist you with updating your payroll system, we’ll send you a secure link to a spreadsheet containing your employees’ new superannuation details, including their new account number. Please look out for an encrypted email sent to you from ‘Employer Portal’ between 31 March and 2 April 2026. This will provide you secure access to your spreadsheet.

For employees who have another Mercer Super account that has moved to Mercer Business Super (outside of your employer account), see paying contributions for ‘choice of fund’ employees.

  • My employees’ contributions got rejected. What should I do?

If the contribution was going to USI 19905422981888 or 19905422981999, you will need to resubmit their contributions using the new Mercer Business Super USI and details.

To assist you with updating your payroll system, we’ll send you a secure link to a spreadsheet containing your employees’ new superannuation details, including their new USI account number and benefit category. Please look out for an encrypted email sent to you from ‘Employer Portal’ between 31 March and 2 April 2026. This will provide you secure access to your spreadsheet.

Mandatory information

  • What mandatory information will I need to provide?

There’s some new mandatory information that you’ll need to provide when you submit new member registrations and contributions in Mercer Business Super. Download the 'How to restart super contributions’ guide for details.

Check that all the mandatory information can be captured and included in your SuperStream file. If not, please work with your payroll provider to update your SuperStream file.

  • What is salary (or income) for insurance?

To learn more about salary (or income) for insurance, refer to the Mercer Business Super Insurance booklet 2 for the standard definition or if you have a non-standard definition this will continue.

  • What benefit category should I use?

All benefit categories which have had an active member in the last five years were transferred to Mercer Business Super. However, the benefit category codes will be different.

To assist you with updating your payroll system, we’ll send you a secure link to a spreadsheet containing your employees’ new superannuation details, including their benefit category. Please look out for an encrypted email sent to you from ‘Employer Portal’ between 31 March and 2 April 2026. This will provide you secure access to your spreadsheet.

  • What date should I use for ‘date joined fund’?

    Employee is:  Date joined fund
An existing employee transferring to Mercer Business Super Use the Transfer Date of 20 March 2026
A new employee who joins before 20 March 2026 Use the Transfer Date of 20 March 2026
A new employee who joins on or after 20 March 2026 Use the employees’ start date

Do not use a date prior to 20 March 2026.
The insurance design for your employer account will commence in Mercer Business Super by this date.  If you enter an earlier date, eligible employees may not receive insurance.

  • What if my payroll doesn’t output all mandatory information?

You’ll need to work with your payroll provider to update your SuperStream file to include all mandatory information, before you can set up new employees or process contributions. If you’ve got any questions, email our Employer Support team at employer.support@esuper.com.au  – we’re here to help.

Employer-paid fees and insurance

  • We pay our employees’ admin fees. Is that process changing?

Currently, we send you a quarterly fee schedule outlining your employees’ admin fees. You can then make additional contributions via SuperStream to rebate these fees for your employees’ accounts.

Following the transfer to Mercer Business Super:

    April

You will receive an email from us with two fee schedules covering:

    • The period from 1 January to 19 March for your employees’ Mercer SmartSuper Plan or Mercer Super Trust – SmartSuper plan accounts
    • The period from 20 to 31 March for your employees’ new Mercer Business Super accounts

You can choose to pay these as one additional contribution for each employee, or as two separate contributions.

    From May onwards

You will receive one fee schedule, which will be generated and sent to you each month (instead of quarterly). You’ll receive this around the middle of each month.

  • How do we pay our employees’ insurance premiums?

We normally send you a schedule of your employees’ insurance premiums around the middle of each month so you can pay additional contributions to rebate their premium. There will be some changes to this timing during the transfer period.

    March

Given you will be unable to make contributions from 10 to 31 March, you will not receive an insurance premium schedule this month.

    April

You will receive an email with three schedules. These will outline fees for:

    • February for your employees’ Mercer SmartSuper Plan or Mercer Super Trust – SmartSuper plan accounts
    • 1 to 19 March for your employees’ Mercer SmartSuper Plan or Mercer Super Trust – SmartSuper plan accounts
    • 20 to 31 March for your employees’ Mercer Business Super accounts

You can choose to pay these as one additional contribution for each employee, or as three separate contributions.

    From May onwards

You will receive one insurance premium schedule sent to you monthly (around the middle of each month).

Insurance

  • Will there be changes to our plan’s insurance arrangements?

There will be some changes to your plan’s default design which may impact the insurance cover that applies to transferring members and new members who join your Mercer Business Super plan, from around 20 March 2026 (the Transfer Date).

These changes are outlined below and full terms and conditions are set out in the Mercer Business Super Insurance booklet 2.

    Plan rating factors

New plan rating factors (PRFs) will apply in Mercer Business Super. These are used to determine the cost of members’ insurance while they are a member of your plan – based on the insurer’s assessment of the collective risk of the employees in your plan, which includes assessing your industry, company size, and your plan’s claims history.

We will provide further details in your Mercer Business Super employer welcome letter in April.

    Default insurance design

The following changes will apply to your plan’s insurance design for Death only or Death and Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance cover.

Where you have a ‘Percentage of Salary’ design Where you have a ‘Unit Benefit’ design
New members joining your plan from the Transfer Date can apply for an additional 5%, 10% or 15% above the value in your default insurance design to a maximum of 30% (subject to ‘opt-up’ offer conditions). This benefit design will change to a ‘fixed weekly premium’ cover in Mercer Business Super. The weekly cost of Death and TPD insurance cover will stay the same, however, because this is a different way of calculating members’ insurance cover, the amount of insurance cover they receive will change.

    Changes to insurance terms

There will also be some additional changes you’ll need to be aware of.

For more information on the insurance changes and benefits applicable to members, refer to the formal notice sent to transferring employees (we emailed a copy to your plan’s primary contact in late January). Full terms and conditions are set out in the Mercer Business Super Insurance booklet 2.

Choice of fund

  • Paying contributions for ‘choice of fund’ employees

You may have employees who have chosen for their super contributions to be paid to their Mercer Super account through ‘choice of fund’. Employees with accounts in the following funds moved to Mercer Business Super on or around 20 March 2026.

    • USI19905422981888 – Mercer SmartSuper Plan (Individual Section and Employer Section)
    • USI19905422981999 – Mercer Super Trust – SmartSuper

Contributions to these employees’ accounts were paused while the transfer took place. From Tuesday 31 March 2026 you can restart contributions using the new plan details:

    • New Plan name: Mercer Business Super
    • New USI: 19905422981708
    • New account number (once available)*

    * Transferring employees will receive a new account number for their Mercer Business Super account. You should ask your employees with transferring Mercer Super accounts (outside of your employer account) to provide you with their new Mercer Business Super account number so you can update your SuperStream file. Your employees can view their new account number by logging into their member portal from Tuesday 31 March 2026. It will also be included in their welcome communication in April. Importantly, while the account number is recommended, it is not mandatory information. If you don’t have an employee’s new account number yet you can still submit contributions with their old account number and we can match this to your employee’s account. However, if your employee has multiple accounts the contribution may not be allocated to the intended account.
